Does Online Dating Really Work?

Remember when everybody used to be skeptical about online dating?  There still are a few skeptics out there that prefer to meet new people the old fashioned way.  However, there are also many success stories of hook ups, marriages and long-term relationships that started from a simple online chat.  Why has this relatively new trend caught on so quickly?  It’s not just because of the Internet’s skyrocketing popularity.  It has to do with the psychology of online dating.

When you date someone in person you are often blinded to subtle flaws in their personality.  Sexual attraction is the main focus of your thoughts, even if you’re not looking for intimacy right away.  On the other hand, online dating brings a more analytical approach to meeting people.  It’s comparable to shopping online for a new house or analyzing a company’s profile before investing any money.

You can be more objective when dating someone online.  When writing to one another you pay more attention to what the other person says.  You catch glimpses of their interests, hopes and dreams—and essentially their soul.  This is much easier to do when you’re not looking at the person and focusing mainly on looks or flirtatious glances.

You could compare online dating to the ancient hobby of romantic letter writing, though the majority of the population favors short sentences to long, drawn out prose.  You might often hear the objection that you can never really trust a person you meet on the Internet.  That may be true, but is it really any different from dating a person in “real life?”  Can you absolutely trust somebody just because they have a friendly face?  If the issue is trust, then it has nothing to do with online dating or in-person dating.  It has to do with guarding your heart until you know you’ve met someone special.

Many single men and single women are getting involved in dating online.  It’s easy to see why, because when you turn to Internet dating you are essentially filtering out mates that you would not be compatible with.  If you are at all picky (and we imagine most of you are, even if you claim that you’re not!) then you know that there are many attractive people that you could meet that would not end up as a good match for you.  Maybe these people have different outlooks on life, different religious beliefs or different attitudes towards sex and morality.  It saves their time and yours to simply screen these people out, and concentrate on finding compatible matches!

Online dating is the best way to meet someone special if you want to take a cautious and intelligent approach to dating in the 21st century.
